The Jack Dawson College Scholarship

The Jack Dawson Perpetual Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 to honor Jack Dawson upon his retirement from the West Valley Eagles after 30 years of dedicated service and leadership with the Club. During his tenure he built the Club into a Conference and National Championship team winning numerous titles and contributing to the development of several Olympic Champions.

The Eagles established this Perpetual College Scholarship Program to reward past Eagles athletes who are current high school graduating seniors and have demonstrated athletic excellence with the Eagles and their subsequent high school teams, together with academic achievement leading to a college career and a desire to continue their running career at the college level.

Candidates must also have demonstrated high personal character and leadership traits together with good citizenship with both the Eagles and the community. Eagles scholarship recipients must be good ambassadors for the West Valley Eagles and an inspriration to the current younger West Valley Eagles Athletes to reach for excellence in their life and continuing athletic careers.

                                                                      Scholarship objectives

The Jack Dawson Scholarship not only honors Jack Dawson’s contribution to Eagles excellence, but also provides an inventive to continue the Eagles tradition. It is the objective to award multiple scholarships to qualified candidates who were ex-Eagle athletes no matter what their event specialty might be: sprints, hurdles, distance or field events. It is hoped that each year the award winners will include both young men and women, sprinters/field events and distance.

  • Candidates must be graduating high school seniors that have applied to enter college and have demonstrated high moral character and leadership.
  • Athletic performance is the primary selection criteria beginning with their Eagles' career and to a lesser extent–but still very important–their high school career. It is hoped that the candidates will have competed at the State and National levels. Eagles and Community Service are also important Factors. Financial Need is not the primary factor but will be considered.

                                                                          Scholarship funds

Multiple scholarships will be awarded by the West Valley Eagles to eligible high school seniors who have been West Valley Eagles Track Club participants. The awards are not based on need but on athletic and academic merit. The stipend is intended for college related expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books.  The West Valley Eagles Scholarship Committee will have sole responsibility for choosing the scholarship recipients. In 2008, eight awards of $500 each were made. It is hoped that in the future, with more fundraising, the size and number of awards can be increased.
